Camarillo Sanitary District honored as Tri‑Counties CWEA Collection System of the Year

The Camarillo City Council recognized the Camarillo Sanitary District on Jan. 22 after the district received the 2024 Collection System of the Year award from the Tri‑Counties section of the California Water Environment Association (CWEA).
Mayor Kildee and district leadership presented the award to Water Reclamation Superintendent Darren Carter and the collection crew. Carter outlined field challenges — working in busy intersections, performing closed‑circuit inspections of hard‑to‑reach sewer lines and maintaining infrastructure — and credited the district’s staff and interdepartmental support across the city for the recognition.
“Now the Camarillo Sanitary District collection staff is a group of staff members that you might see driving around the city in our city logo vehicles…what they are doing is protecting the assets that the city has given us to make sure that sewage is something that is not seen,” Carter said, introducing lead collection system mechanic Dave Barger and long‑time staff Roy Gaines, Jaime Rivera, Ruben Vasquez and Mario Jimenez.
Council members, district board members and members of the public praised the crew for public‑health and environmental protection work. Several council members called the staff “unseen heroes” whose work helps residents safely use water and sanitation systems.
The city thanked the sanitary district staff and photographed the team during the council meeting; no formal action was required.
