Guthrie City Council on Jan. 21 approved acceptance of a $25,000 Main Street incentive grant from the Oklahoma Department of Commerce and the citys $25,000 match to fund a downtown pocket park at the corner of Wentz and Oklahoma.
Shonda presented the project concept, saying the pocket park would add gravel walkways, an activity lawn, trees and benches adjacent to downtown shops and that the adjacent parking area is frequently used for weekly downtown events. "The way the funding is set up, we have about $25,000. Oklahoma Department of Commerce has about $25,000 for a total of $50,000 for the entire project," she said, adding the city obtained a cost estimate and simple rendering from Myers Engineering for the grant application.
Council members asked whether the park would limit vendor space for regular markets; Shonda said the design goal is to maximize community green space while preserving vendor capacity and that final design will consider vendor needs. Mayor-elect Rupp moved the acceptance; the motion carried unanimously.
Ending: Staff will return with more detailed renderings and final design work before construction; the grant acceptance allows the city to proceed with design and matching-fund allocation.
