Hamilton County clerk outlines America 250 local committee, seeks wide participation

Pavan Parikh, clerk of courts and co‑chair of the Hamilton County Local Committee for the America 250 Ohio State Commission, told the commission Jan. 21 that the county is forming a local committee to collect events, help groups apply for state grants and promote county events through official county channels.

Parikh said the committee will act as a single point of contact to gather public submissions and “provide awareness of the different resources for organizations who want to recognize America 250 in Hamilton County.” He said the county’s role would include listing events publicly and helping organizations connect with state grant opportunities that require a local partner.

The nut of the plan is to prepare for America’s 250th birthday in July 2026 by compiling events, promoting statewide themes and ensuring a diverse group of locals can contribute. Parikh said the state commission has assigned a theme to each month of 2026 and that the county committee’s work would include making sure smaller community organizations are visible alongside larger institutions.

Among concrete early opportunities Parikh identified were the Heritage Trees Planting History Project — which proposes planting an oak tree in each of Ohio’s 88 counties — and America’s River Routes Festival. He said River Roots in October will be “the first big major event that’s gonna kick this entire celebration off” and called it a good chance to collect stories and public input. Parikh said the committee aims to be “as shoestring as possible” at the start, focusing on time and volunteer coordination and bringing funding requests to the commission only when a specific county partnership or county funding would be needed.

Commissioner Samarra Dumas urged that the committee not focus on celebration only but leave lasting records and markers for under‑documented local histories. Dumas said she would like to see a historical marker for Bucktown on the Ohio River and asked the committee to include local civil‑rights history and the Cincinnati Black Music Walk of Fame in its priorities. “I don’t wanna throw birthday cake only if we’re gonna have real records,” Dumas said, arguing for permanent markers and documentation to accompany celebrations.

Parikh said the county is working with the prosecutor’s office to set up a formal structure for the local committee and to ensure compliance with public‑records rules so the committee’s work will be part of a permanent archive. He said the county intends to assemble a commission of roughly 10–20 people with diverse backgrounds so the group can reach many communities and avoid “blind spots.” He also indicated the county communications team could host a portal or a place on the county website to collect event listings and contact information once the committee is organized.

Parikh said he would return to the commission with names and backgrounds of committee members once the group is formed and that the committee expects to work with local organizations such as the Freedom Center and the Holocaust and Humanity Center as planning continues. No vote or formal action was taken on Jan. 21; the presentation was an informational update and a request for continued engagement.

Next steps: finalize committee structure with the prosecutor’s office, begin outreach to community groups, and publish a county‑controlled point of contact and event listing once membership is confirmed.
