Caltrans: Indianola interchange bridge work to continue through 2025; some work may extend into 2026

A Caltrans representative updated the Humboldt County Association of Governments on the Indianola interchange project, saying the new bridge work will continue through winter and spring with bridge completion anticipated by early summer 2025.
Caltrans told the board that this spring crews will place soil and lightweight fill in the median to raise the elevation for the future U.S. 101 alignment. By the end of 2025 the agency expects at least one direction of mainline 101 to be driving on the new alignment, with the possibility both directions will be on the new alignment before year-end. Remaining work listed by Caltrans includes constructing southbound off- and on-ramps, a half signal at Airport Road, decommissioning median crossings between Arcata and Eureka, and related finish work.
The representative warned that recent heavy weather has affected the schedule and that some work may continue into 2026. The representative also reminded attendees that applications for the fiscal-year 2025–26 Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant Program are due Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Caltrans did not present new funding details or changes to the scope beyond the timeline and remaining construction tasks noted in the update.
