Octorara students outline multi‑phase courtyard renovation, seek funding and volunteers

The students said the project began about six years ago and is organized in three phases: Phase 1 is hardscaping (sidewalks and amphitheater), Phase 2 is landscaping (trees, meadows and pollinator plantings) and Phase 3 is finishing touches (seating, birdhouses and discussion areas). “We are with the Octoraro Leo Club to present our courtyard project,” said Alexa, a student and Leo Club member, introducing the group and its timeline.
The project is already underway, the students said, and the amphitheater has been installed using money the club raised through fundraisers. The students described planned fundraisers — including car washes and bake sales — and said they expect continued student‑led fundraising and community donations to cover future phases.
District staff and board members described how donated materials helped launch the project. “We had some extra block when we did our Arcaterra project; they ordered too much and gave us a break,” an administrator said, noting that the donated block and favorable pricing helped students install the amphitheater. A member of district staff said the Education Foundation has purchased a billboard that can spotlight student projects, and staff offered to arrange a photo and a PDF of the students’ presentation for wider sharing.
Students and staff described potential volunteer support: a local Boy Scout troop has offered to plant trees if the trees are provided, and community members expressed interest in memorial tree donations. Board members and administrators encouraged using the sign on Route 30 and the Education Foundation billboard to publicize fundraisers and solicit donations.
The presentation concluded with administrators praising the students’ persistence and noting the project aligns with the district’s goals for student engagement and community contribution. The Leo Club asked the board and community for ongoing support in fundraising and volunteer labor to complete landscaping and final amenities.
