COPTA to seek artist qualifications for Sheridan Walker garage mural replacement

Trustees approved a request for qualifications to solicit artists to replace or repair the deteriorated mural on the Sheridan Walker parking garage. Staff told the board the existing mural has weathered beyond repair and that the art commission recommended moving forward with qualifications for three scenarios.
Staff described the three RFQ scenarios: (1) remove the existing mural, apply primer and replace the full mural, (2) remove the existing mural and install a slightly smaller replacement, and (3) remove the existing mural and install an alternative smaller composition (details in packet). Staff said the RFQ process will include a selection committee intended to shortlist three qualified artists who would later present design proposals.
The first selection committee meeting is scheduled for Feb. 25. Trustees and trustees’ comments at the meeting endorsed pursuing public art to enliven the block near the Arts District; one trustee suggested the committee consider honoring the late Chairman Kaufman’s advocacy for the mural program in an unspecified manner. The motion to approve the RFQ and authorize staff to advertise passed by electronic vote.
