Denton ISD explores staff childcare expansion after survey finds strong demand

Denton ISD staff told trustees on Jan. 14 they are exploring expansion of staff‑focused childcare after district survey results showed strong demand.

Administrators said a November thought‑exchange survey drew roughly 730 participants and that 86 percent of respondents expressed interest in additional staff childcare options. The district currently operates two child centers: Galyon Child Development, which staff said has 72 children enrolled and a waitlist of 55, and Fred Moore (on the Gonzales campus) with capacity for 104 and a waitlist of about 20.

District leaders told trustees they are evaluating district facilities to identify spaces where high‑quality, affordable childcare could be provided in a way that is cost‑neutral to the district. Staff noted that the greatest need is in the Braswell zone and that many neighboring districts already provide on‑site childcare, which can be a recruitment and retention advantage.

Officials cautioned that childcare must be financially sustainable and said the district will focus first on availability, quality and convenience rather than an immediate start date. They said they would continue facilities analysis, engage potential community partners and pursue a model that could operate without creating a structural budget deficit.

Trustees and staff discussed tradeoffs between speed and quality; district leaders said they prefer to develop a sound program design rather than commit to an early start that might be unsustainable. No vote or contract action was taken; the board received the informational update.
