Residents, commissions highlight beautification awards and outdoor recreation networking

Cliff Moon, chair of the Community Appearance Commission, reported the commission presented nine Beautification Awards for 2024 across residential and nonresidential categories and described a year-long ‘Beautifying Hickory’ self-nomination program that recognized people monthly for landscaping and plantings. “We presented 9 awards this year,” Moon said, and noted the annual Beautifying Hickory Award went to Ronald and Beverly Chapman; Moon encouraged residents to self-nominate via the city website.
Doug Auer, who said he lives in Hickory and chairs the Citizens Business Development Committee this year, updated the council on Creating Outdoor Recreation Economies (CORE), a North Carolina Commerce Department initiative. Auer said Hickory’s CORE strategic plan aims to attract outdoor-recreation businesses and entrepreneurs and announced an Outdoor Recreation Business Networking event on Thursday, Jan. 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Innovative Inc., 391 10th Avenue Drive Northeast, with participation from the Asheville-based Outdoor Business Alliance.
Both speakers framed their remarks as community outreach: Moon asked residents to visit the city website to learn how to self-nominate for awards; Auer encouraged council members and the public to attend the networking event.
