Highlights - Junior High No. 19: The district recommended PBK as the architect for the new junior high to be located near Morton Road and Schliff Road on land the district recently acquired. Facilities staff said the design will increase capacity from about 1,400 to roughly 1,600 students and includes a plan for about a ten‑classroom addition and updates to core facilities. - Miller Career & Technical Education (CTE) expansion: Stantec was recommended to provide design services to expand the district’s Miller CTE automotive program with added classroom and shop capacity in the Miller Career and Technology Center. - Shaw Center and other projects: Staff recommended work and a contractor selection process for renovations and additions at the Shaw Center and security system upgrades (intrusion alarms and access control) at selected campuses; staff noted certain bids and project amendments will be brought back for board action in coming months when full GMPs (guaranteed maximum prices) are known.
Trustee concerns and logistics Trustees asked about traffic and parking at program facilities, how larger school footprints affect future bond timing and whether using larger junior high footprints will reduce reliance on portable classrooms. Staff said they are studying traffic/parking solutions (including an engagement with a traffic engineering consultant) and that larger building footprints are intended to buy additional near‑term capacity and delay the need for future bond measures.
Contracting notes Staff explained scoring and selection rubrics used in contractor and design selections and noted in some modestly competitive solicitations only one firm submitted a qualifying bid for a specific hardware‑heavy package (e.g., intrusion/hardware upgrades), which staff said can occur when work is specialized.
Next steps Specific contracts and GMP amendments will be returned to the board for formal approval in future business meetings as vendor pricing, long‑lead orders and scope‑refinement work is finalized.
