Student ambassadors from Rockport Fulton High School presented the Student Advisory Leadership Team's (SALT) mission statement to the board and asked how the trustees influence the district's mission and vision. Board members described their role in setting district goals, holding workshops with administrators and working with the superintendent to align resources.
The student presentation matters because it was aimed at establishing a formal channel for student voice and clarifying how students can help shape district direction; trustees described existing processes for revisiting mission and vision and for using community input in goal-setting.
Levi Dias, a junior and student ambassador, read SALT's mission: to advocate for the student body, foster an inclusive and engaging school environment and prepare students for post-graduation choices. Students asked how the board helps shape and guide the district mission and how the board ensures statements reflect student and community needs.
Trustees responded that the board holds workshops, invites administrators to present classroom and district-level information, and uses those discussions to form or refresh mission and vision statements every three to five years. Trustee Cruzan (identified in the transcript as a board member) described a process of starting with school culture and climate and then building the mission around those priorities; other trustees said they collaborate with the superintendent to translate mission and vision into district goals and to ensure the district has resources to meet those goals.
Students also asked about the board role and pathways to serve as trustees; one board member outlined election and appointment options for filling board vacancies and described typical responsibilities: overseeing the superintendent, setting policy and approving the budget. Trustees emphasized that regular attendance at district events and listening to students and staff are important ways to remain informed.
Trustees and district staff thanked the SALT ambassadors for their questions and participation; the board and superintendent said they value SALT as a student voice and invited continued collaboration.
