Audit finds door‑entry lapse at Garfield Elementary; district completed staff training

Chief Foss presented the Jan. 21 intruder detection audit to the board, reporting the district has completed six of 16 campus visits and that one corrective action was required after a Dec. 19, 2024 inspection at Garfield Elementary.
According to the audit report presented by Chief Foss, an intruder gained access to a Garfield building by following a staff member through an exterior door and was stopped by a police officer 22 seconds after entering. The audit recommended corrective actions; district staff reported they conducted the required training for Garfield staff on Jan. 13 that emphasized keeping exterior and interior doors closed and locked and verifying school identification lanyards.
Chief Foss said the audit program inspects campuses monthly; he noted two other recent audits (Chavita Elementary and Early College High School) produced positive feedback from the inspector about campus structure and leadership. Dr. Rios told trustees that the audits are required to demonstrate instances when an auditor gains campus access and to document corrective steps so the district can improve staff practices.
The audit presentation was informational; the board did not take a separate vote beyond acknowledging the corrective action plan and completed training.
