SFDRCISD outlines middle school redesign, rezoning and staffing plan

Dr. Rios, superintendent of San Felipe‑Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District, told the board on Jan. 21 that the district has identified and hired a third middle‑school principal and finalized rezoning plans for the middle‑school redesign.

The middle‑school redesign, officials said, focuses on leadership at each campus, rezoning and facilities. Dr. Rios said principals collaborated to balance teacher experience across the three campuses and that the district has a communication plan to notify families; parent letters and student assignment notices are scheduled for February.

Dr. Rios said the district has worked with a demographer to establish rezoning lines and that Garfield Elementary students will be rezoned to other campuses. He also reported facilities work tied to the redesign, including construction of a second gym at Garfield and property acquisition and fencing at San Felipe Memorial Middle School.

Board member Mr. Galindo asked how staff assignments would be made. Dr. Rios said principals “came up with a list” and that transfers are being balanced “based on experience and certification” so that teacher experience is distributed across campuses. He said final staffing decisions would be public within about two weeks so the district can verify student counts before finalizing assignments.

District staff said outreach to families will follow the board’s schedule; specific individual notices were not yet mailed but are planned for late February.

The board did not take a separate vote on the redesign during the meeting; Dr. Rios said the presentation was an update and that further actions and notifications are part of next steps.

For now the district plans to continue reporting updates to the board as rezoning notifications and staffing assignments are completed.
