Grandview Hills parents say PTA enrichment clubs paused after district cites alleged YMCA exclusivity; parents seek written rule and contract

Carla Gallagher Murray, PTA president at Grandview Hills Elementary, told trustees the PTA has long provided after‑school clubs — chess, cooking, musical theater and others — that she said differ from YMCA childcare offerings. “We put a lot of research and care into providing quality clubs that meet both our students’ interests and enrich their elementary school experience,” Murray said. She said PTA leaders requested the language that allegedly bars PTA programs and the contract that the district relied on, but those requests were repeatedly not answered.
Other Grandview Hills parents described students who lost regular programming and urged the board to allow PTA‑sponsored enrichment to resume. One parent said the PTA‑run robotics program and other clubs had given her child an ongoing interest in STEM and that suspending the clubs interrupted that pathway.
District response and board follow‑up Trustees asked administration for a written update. Trustee Anna Smith requested a memo clarifying where the line is between “after‑school enrichment” and “childcare” and asked administration to provide a single point of contact so PTAs can follow a clear process. Trustee Sade Fashukun and others emphasized the need for administration to produce any contract or policy the district relied on and to explain how it should be applied to PTAs and volunteers.
