Education Support Services (ESS) consultants told the Lennox School District board on Wednesday they have substantially completed a district‑wide classified job study that revises job descriptions, documents essential functions and adds Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and physical/mental demand language to each description. The study now moves to compensation benchmarking and the California School Employees Association (CSEA) review process.
“Classification study is a study where you take a look at the different positions… and find out what is required in those positions,” consultant Richard Tower said. ESS staff described a multi‑step process that included employee questionnaires, supervisor reviews, focus groups and draft revisions returned for employee input.
ESS said many existing job descriptions were brief and out of date; the revised descriptions include expanded duties, knowledge and ability sections, physical and mental demands, ADA accommodation language and emergency‑duty provisions. Consultants emphasized they did not add duties to employees’ work but captured work staff said they already perform.
The process grouped roles into families (clerical, facilities, food services, etc.), produced draft descriptions, returned them to employees and supervisors for comment, and will now undergo a comparable‑compensation study against local districts. The consultants said the full package will then go to the district’s personnel office and to CSEA for review and possible negotiations on pay adjustments.
Consultants estimated the classification work will be finalized to personnel and CSEA in coming months; the timeline for compensation adjustments depends on CSEA review and any negotiations. Trustees asked for regular updates and emphasized transparency; a CSEA representative was invited to participate in meetings during the project.
