On a 4–1 roll-call vote the Irondale City Council approved rezoning for two parcels on 5th Terrace South from R‑2 residential to O (office).
An architect representing the applicant told the council the design team held a community meeting, took resident input and revised the plan to move a parking area away from the corner and to use office zoning rather than a higher-intensity commercial designation. The applicant said the revised plan includes a landscaped buffer along neighborhood-facing property lines and keeps two existing houses in place while redeveloping the corner site.
Council discussion emphasized neighborhood outreach and requested assurances about buffering and parking placement. Councilwoman Toni Cuellar voted against the rezoning; Councilman John London, Councilman Robert Box and Councilman Aaron Sims voted in favor; Council President Spivey recorded his yes vote as well.
Why it matters: The rezoning changes the allowed use at a corner lot near older residential blocks. The applicant said the office designation and revised parking layout respond to neighbors’ concerns while allowing development at a visible corner.
What’s next: The applicant will proceed with site plan work and permitting steps that reflect the revised parking and landscaping commitments recorded during the council’s public discussion.
