The Wilson County Commission approved two rezonings and one master‑plan amendment and granted a requested deferral for a separate rezoning during its Jan. 21 meeting at the county courthouse.
The commission approved a land‑use plan amendment and rezoning for property at 1615 Sparta Pike from R‑1 (rural residential) to C‑2 (general commercial). Austin Holt Gray, who said he plans a drive‑through coffee shop and restaurant called Earl’s Cafe at the site, spoke in favor of the change and presented a one‑mile radius map showing nearby commercial properties. Christopher Lawless, county planning staff, told commissioners the application was presented to the Wilson County Planning Commission in October 2024 and “failed to receive a positive or negative recommendation.” The commission approved the land‑use change and rezoning by voice vote; the clerk’s record shows the action carried with no opposition noted.
The commission approved a rezoning for property at 1108 Highway 109 North from R‑1 (rural residential) to C‑3 (highway commercial). Charlie Dean of Dean Design Group presented the application on behalf of owner Gene Callas; Lawless said the City of Lebanon’s regional planning commission gave a positive recommendation. Commissioner Smith, whose district includes the parcel, indicated he had no concerns; the commission voted to approve the rezoning.
The commission also approved a master‑plan amendment for the property at 2720 McCreery Road (Wilson County tax map 137, parcel 16) to permit mini‑storage, truck parking and box‑truck rental. Charlie Dean said the site accesses Logistics Drive, not McCreery Road; the Planning Commission forwarded the amendment with a positive recommendation and the County Commission approved it.
Separately, the commission agreed to a one‑month deferral requested by Jake Porter (Civil Site Design), representing an applicant for a rezoning from R‑1 to C‑3; the applicant asked to appear before affected area residents and return at the February meeting.
Planning staff materials for each application were available at the Wilson County Planning Office during business hours, Lawless said.
Votes at a glance: the commission approved the 1615 Sparta Pike land‑use amendment and rezoning (voice vote; no opposition recorded), approved the 1108 Highway 109 North rezoning (voice vote), approved the 2720 McCreery Road master‑plan amendment (voice vote) and approved a one‑month deferral for the Kirby Watt/Porter matter to February.
