Planning commission and staff highlight MPO survey, uniform development code meeting, traffic projects and community services

At the end of its meeting the Socorro City Planning and Zoning Commission heard several reports from commissioners and staff about upcoming outreach and transportation projects affecting the city.
Commissioner Andrew Arroyo, who serves with the city’s economic development department business mentors group, suggested providing new business registrants an information packet listing city events and resources. Planning staff said the suggestion would be shared with the economic development team and city manager.
Planning staff also encouraged commissioners to complete the Metropolitan Planning Organization’s 2052 Metropolitan Transportation Plan survey to help secure MPO funding for local priorities. “I would highly encourage you guys to do that questionnaire to, you know, to let them know what's important to Socorro,” staff said.
Staff reminded commissioners of a community meeting on the Uniform Development Code scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, in council chambers. The session will be led by Able City with hands-on activities and staff assistance to review zoning, subdivisions and the code’s other components.
Staff and commissioners also discussed local service items: collaboration with Lower Valley Water District for neighborhood trash and tire pickup events and how to place public trash cans, and recent reports about the planned traffic signal on Bowman Road at North Loop. Staff said they will follow up with TxDOT about the Bowman/North Loop signal, which had missed an earlier projected start date.
The planning department briefed the commission on Arterial 1, an east‑west connector (Bridal Drive/I‑10 corridor) still in the NEPA and corridor-alternative stage; no final alignment has been chosen and the project remains in local government planning in partnership with TxDOT and the MPO.
Staff asked commissioners to check emails for links to the MPO survey and to attend the Uniform Development Code meeting next week.
No formal action was taken on the reports; staff requested only that commissioners participate in outreach and follow-up activities.
