The Brockton City Council Committee voted to recommend accepting and expending $73,000 in Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) funds to support the city’s recycling program.
Patrick Hill, speaking for refuse/recycling operations, said the DEP award is an annual grant given on a point system that recognizes the city’s recycling program and population served. Hill said the money is typically used to purchase recycling and trash barrels, and more recently to support deployment of cameras to detect illegal dumping.
Councilor Nicastro asked for a breakdown in the materials provided; staff said the package shows $68,000 for the Sustainable Materials Recovery Program and $5,000 for a universal waste shed. Hill said the universal waste shed at the recycling center accepts items such as paint and certain household chemicals; residents must check in and identification is requested. The shed is currently a 20-foot container on site that has been operating for about eight or nine years and is free for Brockton residents, Hill said.
The committee voted favorably by hand vote to recommend acceptance of the DEP funds; the grant will be deposited into the existing enterprise/revolving fund for refuse/recycling purchases.
