Shawnee — The Shawnee Municipal Authority on Jan. 20 approved the cooperative purchase of preventive root-control services from Duke's Root Control Inc. to treat sanitary sewer lines.
Public works staff said the $110,636 contract will treat approximately 55,000 feet of line with a herbicidal foam that kills roots inside clay main lines. Staff said roots and grease are the leading causes of sanitary sewer blockages and that targeted treatments over the last two years have reduced service calls.
Staff emphasized the treatment is for wastewater collection mains and is not applied to drinking-water lines or treatment processes. The Authority adopted a resolution to approve the purchase under the Houston-Galveston Area Council cooperative purchasing agreement by unanimous vote.
The contract will fund preventive maintenance across older areas of the city where clay sewer lines remain in service; staff said man-hours and emergency responses have fallen in areas treated previously.
