I think we'll have between 5–10 people over the last 4 nights that have taken advantage of that," Martenak said. He said volunteers and community groups are providing meals and that the shelter is seeking donations (blankets, noodles, snacks, bottled water) and volunteers for overnight shifts.
Public commenters also raised access and safety concerns. A resident identified as Kathy urged the council to add handicap parking on Railroad Avenue because side streets do not meet mobility needs. Dean Jewett asked the council to prioritize sidewalk repair and warned of tripping hazards on Railroad Avenue and nearby sidewalks; he said he has raised the issue multiple times and asked public works to address liability and enforcement questions. Jewett also asked for a public town hall and said if the council did not act he would rent the civic center and convene a community‑sponsored meeting.
Staff responses and next steps
Public Works Director Aaron Nix said the Feb. 5 forum on downtown sidewalk repairs will be held at the Civic Center from 6 to 7 p.m. to discuss work planned for Railroad Avenue and the interplay between sidewalks and downtown street trees. Nix said public works is reaching out to the chamber and downtown businesses to encourage participation.
Shelter organizers asked for donations and volunteers; staff reiterated contact details are listed on the shelter's Facebook page.
