Warrenton High School’s girls varsity team beat the visiting Holt Indians 45-34 on Friday night at the Warrenton gymnasium, snapping a two-game skid and extending the Warriors’ winning streak to three games.
The Warriors’ defense — a switch from man-to-man to a 2-3 zone in the first quarter — slowed Holt’s outside shooting and helped Warrenton build and hold a second-half lead. Warrenton led 25-15 at halftime and maintained a margin through the fourth quarter, sealing the victory on late rebounds and free throws.
The lead scorer for Warrenton was Naija Love, who finished with 14 points, above her season average of nine. Mikayla Woodhouse added 13 points and was credited repeatedly for defensive rebounds and interior presence. For Holt, point guard Sophia Lewis led the team with 11 points and Eden Wilson scored 10.
Warrenton’s midgame defensive change was repeatedly referenced by the broadcast team as the turning point. “Switching that zone really seems to have caused Holt some problems here,” commentator John Meyer said as the Warriors extended their run in the second quarter. The announcers described repeated instances in which Warrenton’s zone forced Holt into contested outside attempts and difficult inbounds plays.
Warriors coach (identified in the broadcast as Coach Logan) rotated players to maintain pressure and to protect starters in foul trouble; Savannah Miller and Zoe Duncan played extended minutes and contributed on the boards. Holt’s coach (identified as Coach Fry) used timeouts and full-court pressure late in the fourth quarter to narrow the deficit to eight points but did not overcome Warrenton’s rebounding and late free throws.
The final sequence included free throws and defensive rebounds that the announcers cited as decisive. “Your final score, Warriors 45, Indians 34,” announcer Keith Brown said at the final buzzer.
The Warriors came into the game averaging about 40 points per game and left with 45, while Holt, which averaged around 49, was held below its season average. Warrenton called for a rematch-style contest again Friday, Jan. 24, when the Warriors play Orchard Farm in another doubleheader.
The broadcast included a pregame performance of the national anthem by third-grader Naomi Janes and halftime reports of individual statistics and foul counts from the first half.
