El Centro city staff and a vendor told the City Council on Jan. 21 that a concrete-slicing approach has been used across the city to remove dozens of sidewalk trip hazards since 2022 and that the city is preparing to expand the program.
The update, presented by Abraham Campos of the Department of Public Works and by representatives of Precision Concrete Cutting, said the city has identified and addressed 366 locations since about 2022 using the vendor’s vertical “slice” method. The presenters said the work targeted vertical rises mostly between about a half-inch and 2 inches and that the slicing approach can bring sidewalks into Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) alignment at a fraction of the cost of full panel removal and replacement. The presentation was informational; council took no vote on the item.
