The Tippecanoe County Board of Zoning Appeals elected Steve Clevenger president, Robert member Robert Novak vice president and Attorney Eric Burns secretary during an organizational portion of its meeting. The board also approved the minutes from the Dec. 4, 2024 NEBZA public hearing and voted to continue two zoning cases for procedural reasons.
The elections and the minutes passed by voice vote and were recorded as unanimous. The board continued BZA 2178, filed by Dylan Dempsey of Carson Consulting Engineers, to the Feb. 26, 2025 meeting after staff said the petitioner had not provided required check-in paperwork, most notably the affidavit for public notice. The board continued BZA 2181, filed by Todd A. Tucker and Julie E. Tucker as trustees, to the March 26, 2025 meeting.
Why it matters: the officer elections establish the board's leadership for 2025, and the continuances set new hearing dates for the two cases. Staff told the board that the missing affidavit prevented a legitimate public hearing for BZA 2178; the petitioner agreed to a continuation. The transcript records that staff and the petitioner discussed scheduling and that the Feb. 26 date was selected after a correction to the originally stated month.
Board actions and procedure: the meeting opened with roll call and the chair noted a quorum was present before nominations were opened for president, vice president and secretary. Motions to nominate and second nominations were made for each office; the board took voice votes to elect Clevenger as president, Novak as vice president and Burns as secretary. A motion to approve the Dec. 4, 2024 NEBZA public hearing minutes was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
On BZA 2178, staff reported the petitioner was missing the affidavit for public notice and other check-in items needed for a valid public hearing. Staff and the petitioner discussed scheduling; the petitioner accepted a continuance and the board moved the case to Feb. 26, 2025. The transcript notes this was the petitioner’s second and last continuance for the case. The board separately moved and seconded a continuance for BZA 2181 (Todd A. Tucker and Julie E. Tucker, trustees) to March 26, 2025; that motion also carried by voice vote.
Administrative note: a board member mentioned members have new devices intended to reduce paper; no formal action was taken on that item.
