County hears multiple public-service funding requests ahead of budget season

Benton County supervisors heard a series of presentations from regional and local nonprofit and intergovernmental groups outlining services and asking for continued or new funding as the county prepares next year—s budget.

Karen Kurt, executive director of the East Central Iowa Council of Governments, described the regional services provided under 28E intergovernmental agreements and told the board the county contributes a small assessment; "that was $17,902," she said. Kurt and other presenters asked supervisors to consider those routine contributions when they prepare budget allocations.

Why it matters: The presentations covered public services the county helps underwrite or partner with — watershed planning and coordination, transportation and volunteer programs for older residents, domestic-violence advocacy and rural library services. Several presenters asked the county to hold funding steady or provide modest support for staff positions that enable grant administration and on-the-ground projects.
