Amaris Busio, a student in the college course program at Rio Hondo College and a volunteer with Amigos de los Rios, told meeting organizers at a site visit at Wheeler Elementary that her group is working to clean and restore areas along the Rio Hondo Trail after a nearby fire.
"We try to protect the Rio Hondo Trail. We do clean in rivers. We do greenery around the schools," Busio said. She described heavy smoke and ash at the site and said volunteers were wearing masks because of the conditions.
Busio said the Amigos de los Rios office "burned down completely. Completely, completely," and that the group's director "lost her house and the office the same day." She described the volunteer work as a way "to help our community as much as we can because it's overwhelming to see people that lost everything in 1 day."
Volunteers are focusing on removing ash and debris, protecting local plants and wildlife and improving areas "for the kids and for future generations to come," Busio said. The remarks were made during public remarks at a site visit to Wheeler Elementary and reflect community-led cleanup and recovery efforts rather than a formal government action.
No formal motions, votes or funding decisions were recorded in the transcript excerpt; the comments were presented as a report from volunteers on the ground.
