The Louisa County secondary roads representative updated the board on winter preparations, equipment needs, and a proposed salt storage facility.
Staff said the department submitted budgets (a 3% increase requested) and expects to spend down a portion of a multi-year balance on equipment and bridge-approach repairs. The roads supervisor described plans for a new salt shed with concrete walls and a hoop-style roof (proposed 70x80 footprint) that would allow buying salt in bulk and save an estimated $35 per ton compared with current per-ton purchases; with bulk storage the county could also purchase state-procured pure salt at roughly $90/ton versus $135/ton delivered under current arrangements.
Planned equipment purchases discussed included a skid-steer loader for multiple maintenance uses, replacement of aging patching equipment and spray-foam insulation for a shop. Staff noted a priority to prepare a list of winter patching projects and decide which work will be done in-house versus contracted out.
The board discussed the budgetary trade-offs involved in shifting costs between funds (noting the EMA/dispatch budget conversation earlier) and asked for additional project lists and cost estimates; no new contract or purchase order was approved at the meeting.
