County staff to check status of New Underwood Road discussion with Meade County and DOT

A commissioner asked for an update on a long‑running effort to have the state or another party assume responsibility for New Underwood Road north of New Underwood. County staff summarized prior negotiations in which the state, Meade County and local officials considered a transfer of the corridor, with Mead County pursuing federal grant assistance and the state indicating it wanted the entire corridor rather than piecemeal segments.
County staff said previous proposals would have required Pennington County to assume certain service‑road responsibilities or to take over portions of Sturgis Road for a time; the county evaluated life‑cycle costs for bridge and culvert structures and concluded the state’s financial terms were not acceptable to Pennington County. “That number the state was requesting from Pennington County to make this happen was an astronomical number,” staff said.
Staff told commissioners they will contact Mead County highway officials to check the current status of the grant application and whether Mead County is continuing the letter campaign and outreach described by a meeting participant.
Ending: Staff said they will report back to the Board after contacting Mead County.
