Jessica Vanderwerf Wilson, Edina’s Water Resources Manager, described a week of online technical sessions, community workshops and water‑sampling activities coordinated with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and local partners. “Winter Salt Week provides an opportunity to educate our community about the responsible use of deicing salt, including environmental considerations and effective application methods,” Wilson said.
Longtime Edina water steward Sue Nissen told the council Winter Salt Week helps give residents hope that salt‑use reductions can scale. “My experience is that citizens…are shocked to hear that salts don't break down,” Nissen said, describing outreach and local pilot practices. Council members praised prior local reductions in salt application and noted communication tools such as a “measuring cup” for homeowners helped reduce residential salt use.
The proclamation asks city departments, residents and businesses to adopt smart‑salting practices, consider training for contractors and promote the Low Salt No Salt Minnesota program. No enforcement changes were proposed; staff said the proclamation and education events are intended to reduce overuse while preserving public safety.
