Officials said $6,800 of the increase reflects an expected raise in election judges’ pay and another $5,800 is for early‑voting judges. Additional costs include higher part‑time temporary staffing based on activity levels, conference and training fees and modest increases in postage and fuel for election‑related mailings and logistics. The election office said the state mandates some training and equipment participation and that the county must pay associated costs; the office noted they do not receive state grants to cover mandated conferences.
Commissioners asked whether part‑time increases are for temporary or permanent conversions; the election official said the request covers increased hourly positions and is not a benefits‑eligible conversion. The office also described a modest postage increase intended to mail voter registration cards to all voters and small fuel increases for vendors and field support. The board gave no final appropriation at the session and will consider the elections request as part of the overall county budget.
Commissioners and elections staff agreed to carry the requested increase forward for further review within the FY2013 budget process.
