Council approves amendment to smart-meter contract, staff says integration work remains

The City Council Water and Power Committee on an unanimo us recorded vote approved an amendment to an existing smart‑meter contract intended to continue work on communications and systems integration for advanced meters.
The amendment was described by Claudia Zamarys, Department of Water and Power staff member, as a follow‑on to the 2019 contract. “Ya también terminamos con treinta y seis por ciento de la red de comunicación para los medidores inteligentes,” Zamarys said, adding that the utility has installed “cuatro mil doscientos” advanced meters and is working to integrate meter data into billing and operations systems.
The amendment does not cover the entire $95 million program, Zamarys said. “Los noventa y cinco millones de dólares que se tiene el contrato es parte de otro contrato... nos queda dinero, que se va a utilizar como veinticinco millones para continuar con el trabajo de integración y de continuar con la gama de instalaciones,” she told the committee.

Councilmembers pressed staff for specifics on progress and scope. Zamarys said the advanced meters (also called “medidores avanzados”) will help detect outages without waiting for customer reports, provide usage visibility and support future programs. She told the committee that communications infrastructure is partially complete and that the amendment covers an 18‑month period of continued integration.
Councilmember remarks and vote: A motion to approve the amendment was made and seconded; committee members recorded recorded votes in favor. The committee minutes show four yes votes and at least one member absent; the item was approved.
Ending: Staff said additional contracts and an RFP are planned to carry forward the broader deployment phase. The committee moved on to the next agenda item after the vote.
