The Energy and Environment Committee approved the City Administrative Officer's report recommending submission of two applications to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling grant program for fiscal year 2024.
Paul Cobian, environmental affairs officer at the Bureau of Sanitation, said the EPA solicitation totals $275,000,000 nationwide and the city’s two applications would support 24 household hazardous waste mobile collection events (eight per year under the proposed schedule) and pilot activities tied to the city's October 2024 Comprehensive Plastics Reduction Program. “This grant is being offered by the US EPA in the amount of $275,000,000,” Cobian said on the record.
Staff noted the household hazardous waste events historically occur across council districts and that the grant would help resume and sustain those events after pandemic interruptions. Mary Benson and Pablo Hernandez, who work on household hazardous waste recycling, said the events collect household hazardous materials, electronics and coordinate with contractors for processing. Staff also said the grant process encourages partnerships with nonprofit organizations, and the submittal envisions working with community‑based groups to implement elements of the proposals.
The committee approved the CAO report and the submittal of the two grant applications on a roll call; four members voted yes and one member was absent.
