Saint Jerome—s Creek jetty project postponed as Army Corps rescoping prompts possible emergency dredge request

The Army Corps of Engineers has rescaled the planned Saint Jerome—s Creek jetty project after staff discovered the original scope came in over budget, county staff told commissioners Feb. 14.

County project staff recommended moving the jetty construction out a year while leaving the project listed in the county—s CIP so the county—s planning remains aligned with the Corps— work. Staff said the Corps is exploring shorter or reconfigured jetties and that the Corps— final design may differ from the version previously shown to the county.

Staff also warned that, because shoaling has affected navigation, the Corps may pursue an emergency dredge before the project is re-scoped and constructed. County staff said a Corps-driven emergency dredge would likely require a local match of about $50,000; the county would receive a formal request or letter from the Corps if it pursues that step.

Why it matters: Local businesses and boat operators told commissioners that larger vessels have recently had difficulty using the creek. Staff noted that Saint Jerome—s has been on the county—s project list for more than a decade and that the Corps-funded jetty work and any associated dredge have operational and economic effects for local marinas and commercial users.
