Summary

City staff and volunteers distributed 333 holiday baskets through two programs, raised $13,123 in cash donations and received donations of canned goods and toys; the city also announced the winner of its 2024 photo contest.

City staff and volunteers recognized donors to the Thanksgiving/holiday basket programs and announced the winner of the city’s 2024 National Community Planning Month photo contest during the Santa Fe Springs City Council meeting.

The Department of Community Services’ programs—the Thankful Neighbor and Neighborly Elf basket programs—ran Nov. 22 through Dec. 21 and provided assembled food boxes for seniors and families and toys or gift cards for children, Community Services Manager Ed Ramirez said. Ramirez said the programs served 333 Santa Fe Springs seniors and families in total, raised $13,123 in monetary donations, received approximately 1,000 canned goods and about 100 toys.

"These programs will not be made possible without the tremendous support of our donors," Ramirez said. The council presented certificates to a long list of donors and volunteer groups in attendance, including Associated Packing Incorporated; Boy Scout Troop 5530; Cub Scout Pack 553; EcoWise Inc.; Metro Little League; Santa Fe Springs Christian School; Santa Fe High School; Western Corrugated Design; Santa Fe Springs City Employees Association; Zigliff Material Handling; and community volunteers named in the meeting record.

Associate Planner Jimmy Wong presented winners of the 2024 photo contest. Wong said the contest received 10 entries and that the winning photograph, taken by longtime resident and former parks and recreation employee Alyssa Becerra, will be featured on city platforms.

Council and staff thanked volunteers and community groups for their assistance distributing items at the Gus Velasco Neighborhood Center. No formal council action or spending decisions were recorded for these recognitions during the meeting.
