Council hears calls to address vacant properties, homelessness and ongoing trash-collection problems

Several speakers in public comment described personal experiences with homelessness and the strain of cold weather; one speaker said she nearly became homeless during a stretch of negative temperatures and credited local service providers for temporary help. Residents described houses left vacant while people sleep outdoors nearby.
On trash collection, multiple aldermen and residents complained about ongoing problems with Republic Services following snow and severe cold. Councilors said Republic suspended operations during storms and has been slow to catch up; residents complained the company’s 1-800 number is unhelpful and asked for a local contact. Councilors asked staff to invite Republic Services to a future meeting to explain delays and provide a local contact for missed pickups.
