Council places small Aspen Park land sale on April 8 ballot

The Brandon City Council approved Resolution 02-25 to place on the April 8 municipal election ballot a question asking voters whether the city may sell a small portion of Aspen Park adjacent to 1509 South Split Rock. Staff said the parcel under consideration is a narrow strip roughly 20–25 feet wide that would restore access to the rear of the resident’s property and allow construction of a detached accessory building.
Staff explained that the city originally acquired the property from Gene Johnson using third-penny sales tax dollars as part of an expansion of Aspen Park. State statute requires voter approval before selling parkland acquired in that manner, so the resolution sends the required referendum question to the municipal ballot. Staff said the city attorney will prepare ballot language that specifies the portion under consideration and makes clear the city is not selling the entire park.
Council members discussed scope and confirmed the proposed sale would be limited to a small parcel on the south side of the park. The resolution passed by motion and was recorded as approved.
