The Davis County School District Board on Jan. 21 approved the mascot and school colors for the new Horizon Junior High: the Ducks, with aqua as the primary color and orange, white and black as accents.
Principal Brett Sims and school staff described a community nomination and voting process: the district collected 337 mascot suggestions from families and then narrowed the list to four finalists (Herons, Ducks, Hawks, Hornets); community members then voted on mascots and color schemes in a two‑part online ballot. The Ducks received the strongest vote share among the color/mask combinations the school posted. Board members approved the selection by voice vote.
Why it matters: mascot and color choices are the final step as the district prepares to open the new junior high. Principal Sims said the school designed color renditions to work with the architect’s proposed building palette and to reflect community preferences. The board congratulated staff, students and volunteers involved in the selection.
