Tompkins County Workforce Development on Thursday unveiled a Youth Opportunity Map and new job-search tools designed to centralize youth services and employment resources for residents ages roughly 14–24.
Chris Vaughn, Workforce Development, said the Youth Opportunity Map—available from the department’s Community Resources page—groups providers and services by category (health, mental health, job training, education, housing and shelter) and supports QR-code distribution for partners. The map launched last month and had recorded 908 views by committee day.
"We created a resource hub for our youth," Vaughn said, describing efforts to offer QR-code papers for partner locations and to link map entries directly to Google for mobile navigation.
Workforce Development staff also announced a partnership with Indeed to provide the Indeed Job Search Academy, a free set of modules covering resume writing, interview prep and career exploration. Vaughn said Tompkins County is among the first five government agencies in the country to join the Indeed academy arrangement; staff will integrate the platform into the county career center web presence and provide workshops and videos.
Why it matters: The map and online tools aim to streamline navigation of local supports for youth and jobseekers and to improve employer outreach with a county-focused job board.
Next steps: Staff plan to expand a job board for locally posted openings, produce photos and short videos of program participants for the website, and distribute QR-code materials to community partners.
Ending: Committee members praised the online resources and encouraged staff to continue outreach and iterative improvements to better tailor services for youth and employers.
