County administration provided several organizational and cultural updates during the Tompkins County Government Operations Committee meeting on Jan. 6.
Bridal, representing county administration staff, said the newly hired county administrator began new-employee orientation on Jan. 6 and that administration expects him to attend future Government Operations meetings. Bridal also reported the county's redesigned website successfully launched on Dec. 11 and thanked Robert Henry for leading required updates.
On staffing, Bridal said the communications director search produced several strong candidates. The county offered the top candidate and has received a tentative formal acceptance; Bridal said details will be provided once the hire is finalized.
On cultural programming, committee members said the poet laureate selection process is starting. The Community Arts Partnership (CAP) will lead the application process; Legislator Susan will serve as the legislature's panel member. The committee discussed commissioning a plaque to display a poem read by outgoing laureate Janie Beebe; several members supported asking Beebe for permission to reproduce the poem on a plaque.
The committee also noted that Jay Franklin asked to pull a proposed resolution about a pause in property assessment from the next legislative meeting. Franklin reported he had been working with the state and believed the county would remain at a 100% level of assessment for the 2025 roll, so the pause resolution was no longer necessary at this time and could be returned later.
Next steps: administration will announce the communications director appointment after finalization; CAP and legislative staff will move forward with the poet laureate selection panel; staff will accommodate the requested delay on the assessment pause resolution.
