Warren County expands meal reimbursements, but Lake Pleasant senior site closed again after mold find

Warren County supervisors on Monday approved a federal grant application and a contract amendment to support senior meals while staff updated the committee on repeated mold at the Lake Pleasant senior center, which currently remains closed.
The committee voted to submit the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act application for the Sept. 1, 2024, through Aug. 31, 2025 period seeking $40,523 in 100% funded aid. Committee records show the application was released Dec. 19 and is due Jan. 24.
The group also approved an amendment to a contract with Countryside Adult Home to raise the per-meal reimbursement from $5.00 to $5.50 and to increase the contract’s not-to-exceed amount to $150,000. The motion to bring the contract amendment was made by Supervisor Runyon and seconded by Supervisor Thomas; the committee called the question and approved the change.
Lake Pleasant senior site: Staff provided an update on repeated mold findings at the Lake Pleasant Senior Center. The center underwent mold remediation and reopened in September, staff said, but mold was found again in December and the site has been closed since. Needham Risk Management visited the site on Jan. 10 and the county is awaiting results of that assessment. In the meantime, seniors continue to receive meals through home delivery and grab-and-go pickup; the county reported there is no interruption in meal delivery even though dining at the site is suspended.
New York State Department of Health involvement: A committee member told the group that the New York State Department of Health had urged reopening the Lake Pleasant site. County representatives said they pushed back and asked for a site inspection; staff said remediation responsibility would fall to the town if mold is confirmed at the site. The county indicated there is no cost to the county for the town to remediate in that scenario.
Why it matters: The contract amendment and the grant application preserve funding and delivery options for Warren County’s older residents. The mold closure is a local service disruption that required an immediate operational response to ensure continued meal service.
