Bay County designates Feb. 3, 2025 as Four Chaplains Day; public speaker recounts WWII story

During the public input portion of the meeting, Charles Campbell, chaplain for American Legion District 10, recounted the story of the four chaplains aboard the troop transport USAT Dorchester, which was torpedoed on Feb. 3, 1943. Campbell described how the chaplains — identified by the resolution as a Methodist minister, a Roman Catholic priest, a Jewish rabbi and a Dutch Reformed minister — gave their life jackets to other servicemen and offered prayers as the ship sank. He invited commissioners and community members to the local observance organized by the American Legion and provided event details.
