The Board approved five proposed leases intended to support state operations and local presence.
During discussion of the leases, State Public Charter School Authority officials explained why new or continued office space is needed in Reno and Carson City. Jennifer Bauer, director of finance and operations for the State Public Charter School Authority, told the Board the authority currently sponsors no charter schools in Carson City (one charter school there is sponsored by the local district). She said the authority sponsors roughly 44 charter holders statewide and serves approximately 80 campuses.
Bauer said the authority has a large concentration of campuses in Las Vegasroughly 70and therefore a large staff contingent in Clark County. She described planned staffing at new offices as "a dozen-ish" positions in Las Vegas, a similar number in Carson City and a similar number in Reno, with hiring guided by where talent resides and where schools are located.
Board members pressed for staffing and service coverage details to ensure the leased space aligns with school needs; the authority offered to provide additional documentation on networks, campus counts and staffing after the meeting. The Board then approved leases 1 through 5 by voice vote.
