County staff updated the committee on a recent timber sale that covered about 37 acres. Staff reported contractors were on site for roughly 20.5 days and harvested approximately 261,000 board feet. The contractor completed cutting operations by late December but left logs staged in the landing; staff will not release the performance bond until site repairs and road mitigation are complete in spring.
Nick, who presented the update, told the committee the harvest focused on retaining and restoring oak on the landscape and that the white oak realized notably higher per-unit prices than red oak. For this sale, staff estimated proceeds in the range of $3,000–$4,000 per acre—above typical statewide averages—because of exceptional volume and quality at this site. Staff said seed trees left on the site were not damaged and credited the contractor for careful work; one concern recorded was that the contractor created a road where staff had not planned one, and the contractor has agreed to repair and regrade it prior to final closeout.
Committee members asked about average returns per acre on county forest land; staff cautioned that returns vary widely by species, stand quality and prescription, and provided a rough statewide average of about $1,000 per acre, while noting this particular sale was substantially higher due to species mix and volume.
