Residents urge county to cover Deseret Peak pool for youth swim programs

Jody Murdock and Carmel Abel addressed the council during the public-comment period on Jan. 21 to ask the county to consider covering the Deseret Peak pool so local high-school swimmers can have more consistent practice opportunities.
Murdock identified herself as a Tooele County resident and parent of a Grantsville High School swimmer and said the county lacks an indoor pool that supports after-school practice. She said families currently drive long distances for consistent pool access and that covering the Deseret Peak pool would allow students more practice time.
Abel said her son is the Grantsville team captain and described swim as a motivating activity that helps keep students engaged. "We would just like, it's not going to affect our kids because they're going to be graduated by the time this happens. But we would love to be able to see for future generations of an additional pool where these students can practice," she said.
The speakers asked the council to consider options that would support future student athletes; the council did not take action on this item during the meeting.
