Tooele County introduces new health officer Grant Sonata

Grant Sonata introduced himself to the Tooele County Council on Jan. 21 as the county’s new health officer, replacing Jeff Coombs, who retired after decades of service.
"It's an honor to be here. I really am grateful to the board's trust in me representing the community," Sonata said, describing his start date as Dec. 26 and noting he spent a day with his predecessor and visited two senior centers as part of early outreach.
Sonata said he has 15 years in public health, including three years as health officer in San Juan County, and that his background includes service in public schools and nonprofits. He said he holds a master of public health from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. in public health from the University of Utah.
Sonata asked to continue conversations with council members about priorities and said he looks forward to aligning health department programming with community needs. Council members thanked him for introducing himself and for his early engagement with senior services.
