Trust recognizes Mercer Island staff for storm response after Nov. 19 "bomb cyclone"

The Open Space Conservancy Trust voted unanimously Jan. 16 to recognize city staff for their response to the Nov. 19 storm and subsequent winter weather that damaged Pioneer Park and other trust properties.
Trustee Marie Bender proposed a resolution-style motion noting the "difficult conditions under which the city staff worked to quickly restore Pioneer Park, its trails and its trail system after the cyclone bomb storm on November 19, 2024, as well as later storms this winter" and asking the trust to formally recognize staff dedication. The board seconded the motion and approved it by roll-call vote; trustees recommended staff distribute the recognition to city channels and to local media.
Trust staff and trustees discussed the scale of the cleanup, including contractor and volunteer contributions, and agreed staff should provide the language for minutes and any public recognition materials. The motion directs staff to share the recognition with City Council and with the city's communications outlets.
The recognition follows earlier discussion in the meeting about storm-related debris management and the policy to leave some downed material to decompose for ecological benefit, balanced against concerns about potential fire hazards in some locations.
