The Revere Local School District Board of Education on Jan. 21 recognized junior Sophie Gehring of Revere High School for a Girl Scout Gold Award project that the student said aimed to increase civic engagement among high-school students.
"My goal is to increase civic engagement at Revere High School because studies have shown that the younger generations have the lowest voter turnout rates," Sophie Gehring told the board. Gehring said her Gold Award project included publishing a voter-information web page on the Revere High School guidance web page, meeting with District 13 state representative Bill Romer to discuss a proposal to allow 16‑year‑olds in Ohio to pre-register to vote, and partnering with the Summit County Board of Elections to bring a youth poll-worker program to Revere that paid eligible 17– and 18‑year‑old seniors to work at the polls during the 2024 election.
Gehring was introduced by school staff and joined at the meeting by her parents, Jason and Catherine Gehring. The board applauded her work and the district counselor noted the project’s role in promoting student civic knowledge and hands-on participation.
The board also recognized several students enrolled at CVCC (the career-technical consortium referenced as CVCC) for recent accomplishments and program participation: Sobe Masoo (sales and service fundamentals), Caroline Wilson (sports medicine/exercise science), James Mitter (power equipment technology) and Sofia Rocher (graphic imaging technology). Board members described the recognitions as part of ongoing monthly student spotlights and praised students’ preparation for career and technical pathways.
What the board noted - Sophie Gehring built a voter-information website hosted from the Revere High School counselor’s page and arranged local partnerships to give seniors paid poll-worker opportunities. - Gehring met with District 13 state Representative Bill Romer to discuss a policy idea to permit 16‑year‑old pre‑registration in Ohio. - CVCC students were recognized for program-specific accomplishments and work‑based learning connections.
No formal board action was required for the recognitions; they were presented as part of the meeting’s presentations and student-spotlight segment.
