Shane Foley, director of the Natural Resources Management Department, told the Board that unexpected timber-sale revenue increased the apportionable amount for the year to about $780,000. Foley said 30% of that apportionment is dedicated to forest development activities (about $234,000); the county spent $180,000 in 2024, leaving a roughly $54,000 balance available for reallocation under the county’s special legislation-created County Development Fund.
Foley suggested maintaining a $25,000–$30,000 balance in forest development for contingencies and allocating up to $45,000 to the County Development Fund for grant awards. He said the $45,000 figure is slightly higher than a previously discussed $24,000 estimate and that the final award amount would be a roughly $100 reduction after accounting for internal percentages.
Richard (county administrative staff) stated that if the consent agenda item to approve the $45,000 allocation is adopted, staff will immediately issue a request for proposals (RFP) for grant applications; he invited commissioners to pull the consent item for discussion if they wanted to alter the terms. No formal vote on the consent item was recorded at the work session.
