At its Jan. 21 meeting the Sandy Springs City Council approved a slate of administrative and program actions, and considered a contested public hearing on Mount Vernon School lighting (which the council denied). Below are the other formal actions the council approved during the meeting.
Votes at a glance
- Board of Appeals reappointments (Agenda item 2025017): The council approved reappointments of Sherry Allen and Nathan Cunnham to the Sandy Springs Board of Appeals. The mayor presented the nominations and the council voted to confirm the appointments.
- North Fulton Emergency Medical Response Oversight Committee bylaws (Agenda item 2025018): The council adopted a resolution authorizing the city to join the regional oversight body formed after the AMR contract and authorized the senior manager to execute the agreement.
- Surplus property (Agenda item 2025019): The council declared various city-owned equipment and vehicles surplus and authorized disposal under city purchasing policy; items included decommissioned police vehicles and aged departmental equipment.
- RAISE grant application authorization (Agenda item 2025020): The council authorized submission of a U.S. Department of Transportation RAISE grant application for the Roswell Road North End Boulevard project and approved a 20% local match (approximately $2.28 million) to support a $9.12 million federal request. Staff said the project is already advanced in preliminary engineering and is a competitive candidate because of community connectivity and equity considerations.
- Parks landscaping contract (Agenda item 2025021): The council awarded an annual landscaping services contract for recreation and parks to White Oak Landscape Company (approximately $445,000/year) and authorized the city manager to execute the agreement. The contract also contemplates a smaller residential-lot maintenance contract to TriScapes LLC at manager signing authority level.
- Right-of-way settlement (Agenda item 2025022): The council approved a settlement and purchase related to right-of-way and temporary construction easement at 295 Mount Vernon Highway for the Johnson Ferry Road/Mount Vernon Highway intersection improvement project. Staff described the negotiated settlement as reasonable relative to appraisals and project impacts.
Other actions and procedural items
- The council approved the consent agenda and several procedural motions including postponement of a work session and a brief executive session on litigation.
What this means
Most items approved Tuesday were routine governmental actions: committee bylaws, surplus declarations, contract awards and a federally linked grant application. The RAISE application represents a multi-million-dollar federal funding pursuit and will require the city to commit local matching funds if awarded. The Mount Vernon lighting decision was the meeting’s only item that the council declined to approve.
