Middletown Area School District received a midterm update on its hazing-prevention efforts during the school board meeting. Mister Fox, a district staff member, told the board the district is at the midpoint of year three of a sustained hazing-prevention initiative.
The district’s presentation outlined why the work matters. “Hazing prevention and safety are easily entwined,” Mister Fox said, adding that the two together define school climate over both short and long terms. The update described steps the district has taken and priorities going forward: sustained commitment to prevention, cultural competency and inclusion, sustainable planning, data-informed strategies and expanded capacity for prevention work.
The report said leaders have issued a statement supporting hazing prevention, the student handbook has been updated to reflect expectations and the district is creating systems to collect both informal and formal hazing reports. The presentation also said the district has increased opportunities for training and professional development for coaches, staff and advisors.
Board members were given the opportunity to ask questions after the presentation; no formal action or vote resulted from the update. Mister Fox closed by reiterating the need for both transparency and accountability and offering to answer questions.
The board moved on to other agenda items after the presentation.
