Park Place student housing seeks blade wall sign on East Fletcher citing visibility from heavy traffic
Summary
Developer of Park Place Tampa sought a variance to place a 24-square-foot projecting (blade) sign on the fourth floor facing East Fletcher Avenue, arguing the existing ground sign is ineffective for visibility along a corridor with tens of thousands of daily drivers; staff and applicant presented traffic counts and design details; record closed.

A representative for Park Place Tampa presented a request to install a 24-square-foot projecting "blade" sign on the East Fletcher Avenue elevation of a student housing project facing the University of South Florida.
The presenter said the sign would project off the fourth story, with the bottom of the cabinet about 46 feet above grade, and argued the parcel orientation and parking configuration limit the effectiveness of the existing ground sign. The presenter supplied a traffic figure of approximately 43,000 average daily drivers on East Fletcher and said a projecting sign would improve visibility for students, parents and visitors arriving from a distance.
Sam Ball of Development Services summarized that building signs are not permitted on residentially zoned multifamily projects unless a variance is granted; staff noted the parcel is residentially zoned and the project is a 781-bed student housing development and that the proposed sign is 24 square feet. No members of the public testified for or against the request. The hearing officer closed the record for this variance; she will file a written decision within 15 business days.
